You can do quite a bit, actually. All depends on what you think is "going too far." Personally, I don't think that banning the sale of weapons designed specifically to kill lots of people quickly and efficiently is going too far.

Cars, you understand, have another purpose entirely. Are they dangerous? Yes. But killing is not the the reason they are built. We can re-think traffic safety, speed limits, road design, licensing. We can build better public transportation infrastructure. There are all kinds of things we can do before we throw up our hands and say it's not possible.
